England are in the last sixteen of the World Cup 2006. They will play either Germany or Ecuador for the chance to progress to the quarter finals. They have a final group game against Sweden to give them the chance to continue to develop as a team.
For eighty three minutes of the game against Trinidad the possibility of progressing was at risk. Then Beckham found Crouch and suddenly the nightmares receded and Gerrrad struck again with a quality goal in the final minute. England go through after only two group games and without picking up further significant injury.
Given the limited ambition and ability of the oppositions it is impossible to gain any measure of English capabilities. Rooney is back and Owen is gaining sharpness with every minute on the pitch. Crouch is in form and Beckham is tellingly effective.
Gerrard is beginning to find space going forward and Lampard is putting his hand up for making the link plays. Lennon showed ability on the ball. Something is beginning to stir.
John Terry cleared off the line from a rare Trinidad attack and if the ball had escaped him England would have gome one down. Its a fine line in football and England will have massive tests ahead of them.
They have another game against Sweden to bed down as a unit and then begin to show the world what we can do.
Unbelievably there are people in the press and on TV who are still intent on knocking Sven and the team and moaning. For everyone else the flags are flying,
England go on, the last sixteen beckons and its the beautiful game in Germany, World Cup 2006. Come On England.
