Parenting: Single Parent Dating

Dating as a teenager was tough enough, but imagine doing it the second time with kids in the picture. That is what is happening in many homes today, as single moms and dads are raising more than 20 million children. So, how do dating and kids mix?

Single mom Carina Staerck has been dating since 5-year-old Haylee was very young, and she is not alone.

More than one-third of American kids are being raised by single parents, many of whom are searching for meaningful relationships the second time around.

Child expert Janet Chan of Parenting Magazine says, it may sound awkward, but you can combine dating and kids with a little care.

"When you are talking to your child about dating, less is more, your child doesn't need details of your love life. Just say you are meeting a friend or you're going to a movie. What your child is interested in knowing is that he or she is going to be safe and won't be abandoned," said Chan.

Here is what else to keep in mind when expanding your social life:

-Take your time. Do not introduce your date at home until you are sure the relationship is meaningful.

-Be prepared for a negative reaction. Your child may resent the idea of sharing you, or feel that you are trying to replace a missing parent, so listen to her feelings.

-Keep things private. Avoid discussing a romance with your child, or even asking whether she liked your date.

As for Carina Staerck, this goes without saying: let your child know that she always comes first.
