Are You Frequenting the Gym Too Much?

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

By: famoustrainer

Many studies at universities, conducted around the world have shown clearly
that recuperation from strength training requires far more rest time than
previously thought.

The latest studies have indicated that high intensity strength trained muscles
need more time than previously thought to recover and become stronger
some studies show that muscles are still overcompensating and getting
stronger for up to 21 days after the previous workout.

Researchers have found that fitness enthusiasts can reduce the time they
spend working out by two-thirds and still achieve the same results. A study
involving male weightlifters has suggested it is counter-productive to spend
hours exercising.

Those who exercised less saw significant decrease in body fat. The study
focused on 16 students aged 19 to 23, who already worked out regularly. They
were split into two groups. Both carried out upper-body training three times a
week for eight weeks. One group did one set of eight repetition: the other did
three sets of the same exercise.

At the end of the study both groups had improved “significantly” in terms of
muscular strength, said researchers from the health and exercise science unit
at the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd, Wales. Report author Dr Julien
Baker said “This study indicates that it is counter-productive to spend hours at
the gym, and that a shorter work-out can achieve exactly the same results.

Muscles take between 4-7 days to fully recover from a workout and another 2-
3 days for over-compensation to take place. It can also take up to 7-14 days for
the neuro - muscular system to fully recover from a high intensity strength
training session.

I¡¯ve observed in 20 years working in gyms, the same people continuing to
train week in and week out, three to four and even more times a week even
though they haven¡¯t made progress in months or even years of training.

I have found through experience that any strength training program that has
you in the gym three or more times a week will have you plateau within four to
five weeks and nothing you do will shift you from this plateau short of cutting
back on training which will re-start the gaining processes again.

The only exception to this rule is the beginner whose strength will increase
through neurological adaptations for up to three months after starting strength
training.

Also perfect technique must be maintained and followed to maximize the
training stimulus on the muscle and to minimize the risk of injury during this
period. Studies have also concluded that split strength training programs have
been shown to be no more beneficial than full body training programs.

The training frequency that you, and everybody else, should use is variable,
not fixed. I repeat not fixed, when you strength train, as a way to develop more
muscle the intensity of your workouts has to progress upward.

If they remain at the same intensity there is no reason for new muscle to grow.
If you want to train effectively you have to understand the relationship between
the increasing intensity of your workouts and the decreasing frequency of
those workouts.

The two main components of strength training are the intensity of the exercise
and the recovery after the exercise. Infrequent, short, high intensity weight
training sessions, followed by the required amount of time to recover and
become stronger is what is needed to increase functional muscle size.

Your rest days are just as important as your training days. By giving your
muscles more time to recover between strength training sessions you will be
on the road to major gains in strength, muscle size and fat loss.

So there you have it, it’s not the training volume but the intensity and
recuperation that’s important when it comes to Gains in Strength and Muscle.¡±

The Benefits Of Natural Vitamins And Supplements

Monday, May 29th, 2006

By: Linda Polansky

While there are many reports that have been released by health, nutrition and medical experts in the last several years that discuss the fact that a good number of men, women and children are obese and not eating properly, there is also a strong segment of the population that is concerned about their health and with nutrition issues. If you are a person who is concerned about what he or she eats, who is interested in understanding the connection between food and health, you will want to have some basic information about the basic benefits of natural vitamins and nutritional supplements.

Some research has suggested that synthetic chemicals that are utilized in more traditional forms of vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements can have some residual effects that might not be healthy over time. Therefore, a growing number of experts are suggesting that a person who is interested in the best possible effects from vitamins and supplements avoid synthetic products because of the potential long term effects that might be inherent in the use of synthetic products.

Another benefit of natural vitamins and supplements is found in the fact that they are absorbed into the body quicker and more readily than are synthetic counterparts. In addition to being absorbed into the body faster, natural products also are absorbed more fully into the body than are synthetic products, as a general rule. As a consequence, you will be able to obtain a greater benefit from a natural product than you might from a synthetic cousin.

While a more tradition, synthetic vitamin or nutritional supplement product might be less expensive, you may very well end up saving money over time. Because there is some evidence to suggest that natural products interact better and more fully with the body, you literally get more bang for your cash when you use a natural product. By developing more healthy living style, you will be sick less and may even avoid some major illnesses.

In the final analysis, if you are interested in developing a truly meaningful plan for healthy living, you will want to take in the best possible foods, beverages, vitamins and nutritional supplements. To this end, using natural products as opposed to chemicals and nutritional products will have more beneficial effects on a person’s wellbeing and overall health.

As you go about considering vitamin and nutritional supplement choices, take the time to visit with your doctor or nutritionist to determine what products will best serve your particular needs.

Easy Weight Loss With Healthier Meals

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

By: JM Jackson

Meals at home and with family do not have to be fat-laden affairs. Nor do they have to be boring, tasteless times of celery mashing around the table. A few subtle adjustments in your food choices will make a big difference on the scales.

Think Lean Meat
Don’t give up meat, just make smarter choices in buying it. Meat is much leaner today than it has been due to trimming efforts on the part of meatpackers. Beef labeled as “loin”, “round” and “extra lean” are your best choices.
According to The Wisconsin Beef Council, cuts like top round, tenderloin or sirloin qualify as lean, healthy selections.

Roasting, baking, grilling, braising and broiling are healthy meat-cooking methods. Use non-stick pans and choose cooking sprays over oil or butter during preparation. Another way to reduce fat is to strain cooked ground beef and rinse it with hot water. Drain it well before you continue the recipe.

Lean Chicken Choices
When we think lean we often look to chicken. Be smart. Many of us turn a potentially diet-friendly staple into something considerably less than healthy. Say no to fried patties,
chicken fingers, nuggets and franks. Switch to broiling, roasting, baking or steaming fresh chicken. Use a non-stick pan with cooking spray, broth or wine.

Keep in mind that poultry dark meat contains about twice as much fat as white meat. Also, the skin is full of fat. You can remove the skin before cooking or choose skinless varieties. Simply make a rule or take off the skin before you eat it.

Lean Turkey Is A Smart Choice
If you’re preparing a turkey, why not cook the stuffing separately? You will reduce its fat content by preventing the turkey fat from soaking into the dressing. Try to use less butter or margarine when preparing the stuffing. Don’t forget to skim the fat off of the gravy with a gravy separator or by
refrigerating it. Leave the drumsticks for the kids. As with chicken, choose light meat over dark and you’ll save quite a few calories.

Steam It Green
Serve steamed vegetables instead of heavy casseroles or cheese-based dishes. Steaming or microwaving veggies means you don’t have to add any fat during preparation; choose lemon juice, herbs, or vinegar over margarine. Use herbs and spices or imitation butter sprinkles as seasoning instead of butter, oil or cheese. If steamed vegetables don’t suit your taste buds, reduce the amount of oil you use if you sautי them. Broth or flavored vinegar makes a great substitute for oil.

Grains Are Great
Whenever you have the chance, choose whole grains as your bread choice. For example, you could choose whole grain breading for stuffing preparation, whole grain dinner rolls, whole wheat bread for sandwiches, and wild rice instead of white.

All types of white bread are high in refined sugar and pack in more calories than grains. These refined sugars are some of the “bad carbs” we hear so much about these days. If you still crave white bread occasionally, choose a “lite” or diet version, which will save you a few calories.

Private Label Vitamins – Why Pay Top Dollar For Generic Supplements?

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

By: Tim Whiston

Today’s vitamin supplement industry is one of fierce competition between distributors and retailers. Numerous companies promise to bring consumers the best supplements money can buy, and often make claims of superior product components and exclusive raw material sources.

And yet the majority of vitamin supplement providers are buying their products wholesale from the same manufacturers.

It’s true. Major retailers like GNC and Vitamin World rely almost exclusively on private label production companies to manufacture and package their supplements for them.

The same is true of direct marketing companies that use independent sales representatives and multi-level affiliate networks to distribute their over-priced vitamin products. This is especially ironic, since this type of retail model often places a strong emphasis on concepts like ‘unique formulas’ and ‘patented processing techniques’ in an effort to justify their high markups.

Manufacturers like Randal Nutritional Products and Vitarich Laboratories produce and package nearly one third of all brand name vitamins supplements sold in the U.S. And Vitarich alone is responsible for the high-priced, ‘exclusive formula’ products sold by at least 21 different multi-level-marketing companies.

There is nothing particularly scandalous about this fact. But it is something I feel the average consumer of vitamin supplements should be aware of.

In essence, there is little reason to pay exorbitant prices for a vitamin supplement. I have spoken with dieticians, pharmacists, and physicians who freely recommend buying the more affordable ‘drug store brand’. As long as a supplement label bears the USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia) approval statement, you can be confident you are purchasing a quality product.

This is not to say that superior supplements are not available. But you shouldn’t take a retailer’s claims at face value.

Do a little research on a product line before spending the extra money. If a distributor doesn’t want to provide you with some basic information about the location of their manufacturing center, you should think twice about shelling out big bucks for their ‘secret formula’ supplements.

Treating Endometriosis with Supplements and Nutrition

Friday, May 26th, 2006

By: Rebecca Prescott

Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue that lines the uterus grows outside the uterus, usually in the pelvic area. But it can grown anywhere, even in the brain and lungs. Endometriosis stimulated partly by the hormones of menstruation. So pain, a characteristic of symptomatic endometriosis, is worse at ovulation and during the menstrual and premenstrual parts of a woman’s cycle.

Symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain, abnormal menstruation cycles, and infertility. If you have endometrial tissue growing between the uterus and the rectum, symptoms can include pain during sex, pain with bowel movements (especially before a period) and pressure in the rectal area. Some women don’t have any symptoms, but their doctors discover endometrial tissue growing where it shouldn’t during a routine check, or a check for other conditions.

Dr Christiane Northrup writes of a link between endometriosis and the autoimmune system. She cites studies on women with symptoms of endometriosis that “show these women often have antibodies against their own tissue, called auto-antibodies. This means that at some deep level, the mind of their pelvis is rejecting aspects of itself.” This is an interesting approach, the psych-spiritual one, that can help address the underlying energetic and emotional imbalances in our bodies when we are dealing with illness.

She goes on to say “When a woman feels that her innermost emotional needs are in direct conflict with what the world is demanding of her, endometriosis is one of the ways in which her body tries to draw attention to the problem.” (p152, Northrup)

Managing Endometriosis Naturally

Dr Northrup suggests a treatment that supports the functioning of the immune system whilst allowing sufferers of endometriosis to find out what they need to address in their lives.

Natural Progesterone

This works to decrease the effects of estrogen on endometrial tissue. Its advantages are that it doesn’t have side effects. The cream is applied every day to soft areas of the skin like the face, neck and abdomen. Dr Northrup recommends using a 2 oz jar per month, alternating he areas it is applied to. She recommends applying it on days ten to twenty-eight of each monthly cycle. There are also natural progesterone capsules that are inserted into the vagina or rectum. The recommended dosage of these is 200 to 400 mg twice a day.

Castor Oil Packs

Apply a castor oil pack to the lower area of your abdomen three times a week or more, for one hour each session. Watch what feelings or thoughts come up for you during this time.

Other Options

Consider getting a massage once a week on alternate weeks for two months. Some women have reported this alleviates their symptoms

Find ways to express your creativity, nurture yourself, meet your own needs. Discover what your needs are.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs

Acupuncture is excellent for managing pain, and using the traditional Chinese system of diagnosis, can address underlying energetic imbalances within your body. Best of all, the treatment is tailored to you exactly. The chinese herbs prescribed usually work in conjunction with the acupuncture treatment, although they can be taken on their own to great effect.

Changes In Diet

Dr Northrup has found that because symptoms of endometriosis are associated with too much estrogen, minimizing foods that encourage estrogen
production can help alleviate symptoms. This means removing dairy products, even of the low fat variety, increasing fiber intake, and minimizing fats. She also recommends:

* multi vitamins - a good supplement with good levels of the B vitamins
* magnesium - 400 - 800 mg which is bout 90 - 150 mg of elemental magnesium. This helps to relax muscles.

Managing Pain Through Nutrition

The premise behind this is that “diseases which are the result of vitamin deficiency are associated with unspecific pains.” (p62, Mills & Vernon). And Mills & Vernon also found research papers that showed that some vitamins have pain relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.

They suggest these vitamins as options in pain management:

* DLPA - D,L-Phenylalanine is an amino acid that has been found to relieve chronic pain. It needs to be taken consistently over time. Some people notice an immediate effect, for others it takes several weeks. If there is no effect after this time then it probably won’t work for you. Take 2 tablets three times a day until pain symptoms are relieved. The maintenance dose is followed after this, which is 1-2 a day. This is based on tablets being 375mg. You may need a prescription for these.

* essential fatty acids - fish oils (omega 3), evening primrose (omega 6):
Take 2000mg per day. Make sure they are cold pressed. A combination oil, like Udo’s, is effective, though a bit more expensive.

* zinc citrate, or chelated zinc:
Research has demonstrated that zinc has anti-inflammatory effects on the knee joints. It reduces the release of histamine and leukotriene from cells during the inflammatory process.

* the non yeast form of selenium

* vitamin A, C, and E which are antioxidants:
Vitamin E inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in the inflammatory process.

* the non yeast forms of vitamins B1, B6 and B12:
These three B vitamins together have an anti-inflammatory effect

* vitamin c with bioflavanoids and enzymes that digest proteins:
Beneficial for reducing inflammation, and helps the immune system.

* proanthcyanadins (found in grape seed extract)

* quercitin

* resveratrol

* probiotics (p74, Mills & Vernon)

Nutritionally, many women with endometriosis find that when they stop eating wheat, they have either less or no pain. Some people are sensitive to sugar and gluten also. If you remove these items one at a time from your diet for a period of about a month, then watch how your body reacts when you eat them again, you’ll know whether this applies to you.

Many women have found relief from endometriosis by trying the different methods above. Sometimes a combination of approaches, both natural and conventional, works best. It depends on your individual circumstances, the level of endometriosis, and the nature of the journey that you are able to take with your body.

South Beach Diet And Alcohol Combination

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

By: Sarah Williams

The South Beach Diet continues to create its own name in many parts of the world. Along with its rapid widespread, many issues surrounding the relationship between the South Beach Diet and alcohol came to surface. With this fact, the number of studies concerning the South Beach Diet and alcohol increases and as such, still many unanswered questions are left.

Speaking about the issue on the South Beach Diet and alcohol, it is commonly noted that the relationship between the South Beach Diet and alcohol is best explained when referring to natural principle behind the South Beach Diet and alcohol. This simply means by looking to every detail mentioned in the South Beach Diet principles and relate it to the function of the alcohol in the diet.

The South Beach Diet in the first place is an eating plan that bears the principle for right carbohydrates and right fats for a healthy life. As such, the South Beach Diet is generally divided into three different phases. With this division, the existence of the somewhat bond between the South Beach Diet and alcohol becomes evident.

According to many studied, the relationship between the South Beach Diet and alcohol is best explained when knowing that the South Beach Diet does not really favor the intake of alcohol in the diet. This explanation between the South Beach Diet and alcohol is in fact shown that during the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet, alcohol is not allowed along with other cookies and goodies. But many people that were given such explanation between the South Beach Diet and alcohol often question the real reason for such restriction. Well, the real reason for such restriction for alcohol in the diet holds that alcohol cause swings in blood sugar that make the South Beach Dieters hungry. This is in fact the purpose of the first two weeks of the diet – to eliminate the dieters’ cravings for food.

Along with such explanation for the relationship of the South Beach Diet and alcohol, another support is given that the alcohol is eliminated in the diet knowing that it has a high level of sugar will hinder the goal of losing weight for about eight to thirteen pounds.

Numerous studies conducted for the relationship between the South Beach Diet and alcohol however shows that a moderate alcohol intake is not that really bad. It is for the reason that it help in slow stomach emptying, and therefore slows the rise and fall of blood sugar, which is the main goal in the South Beach Diet. However, in the relationship between the South Beach Diet and alcohol, it is noted that an excess in alcohol intake doe turn into sugar and can be a diet buster.

So if you absolutely have to have one, it is then necessary to go for a low-carbohydrate version. Another study that shows the relationship between the South Beach Diet and alcohol have shown that hard alcohols have less potential to raise the blood sugar, though they certainly are not that virtuous. But still it is commonly noted to best stay away from it for better health.

Using Calories For Weight Loss

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

By: famoustrainer

Ever wondered what a calorie is? The definition of a calorie is
“the amount of energy, or heat it takes to raise the temperature
of 1 gram of water to1 degree Celsius”.

A calorie is a unit of energy that is associated with food and drink
and is a measure of the energy, or heat, that food produces as
your body uses it as fuel.

The first step in counting calories for your personal weight loss is
to calculate how many calories you burn in a day (your total
daily energy expenditure), this is the total number of calories that
your body expends in 24 hours, including all activities.

This is known as your maintenance level and will be the
reference point (number of calories) from which to start your
dieting.

The average calorie maintenance level for women in the United
States is approx 2000 per day and the average for men is
approx 2500 per day. These are only basic averages and are
usually much higher for athletes or active individuals.

A quick and easy method to find out how many calories you
require per day for weight loss and maintenance is to calculate a
calorie value with a multiplier as set out below.

Fat loss = multiply your bodyweight in pounds with 12 calories
(12 x lb).

Maintenance = multiply your bodyweight in pounds with 15
calories (15 x lb).

This is a very easy method to estimate your daily caloric
requirements, but it has its drawbacks as it doesn’t take into
account your particular activity levels or body fat levels. Despite
this it will give you a good estimated figure that you can work
with.

The maintenance figure that you get is the amount of calories
that you need to consume to stay at your current weight. To lose
weight your calorie intake must be lower than the calories you
burn.

In order to lose one pound of fat per week, you must reduce your
weekly calorie intake by 3,500 calories, which works out at five
hundred calories per day. This can be done by reducing your
calories by 500 or combining a diet with physical activity.

The bottom line is to balance your caloric intake with the amount
of calories that you are burning, that’s the secret to successful
dieting and weight maintenance.

Becoming more conscious of counting calories in your everyday
eating regime is imperative if you are trying to lose weight.
Studies have shown that men and women “underestimate” their
daily calorie consumption by 500 to almost 1000 calories.

You can get a truer picture by keeping a seven-day eating plan
of what you typically eat and drink during the day.

At the end of each days eating, add up the total amount of
calories consumed and write them down on to the eating plan.
At the end of the seven days, add the total calories for the whole
week and then divide by seven, you now have your daily calorie
intake.

Using a calorie calculator can make counting calories easier -
you can total how many calories you will need for your daily
activities to give you more control over how many calories you
should include in your daily diet.

Another technique for low calorie eating is to watch your fat
intake as this has the most calories.

Moderation is always important when you are counting calories,
severely restricting calories, causes the body to lower its
metabolic rate, which reduces its ability to burn fat.

At the same time, hunger signals increase and you quickly start
to crave high-energy foods loaded with fats and sugar, the same
foods you are trying to do without.

This is because when you return to normal eating habits, the
drop in metabolic rate caused by the restriction in calories
means that your old eating habits actually represent excess in
calories.

Not only do you regain the fat stores just lost, but also you may
even gain a bit extra.

“Dieting by counting calories means that all foods are allowed,
nothing is forbidden as long as the calories consumed don’t go
over your daily calorie allowance”

Counting calories can also be flexible enough to accommodate
most busy lifestyles.

Some food for thought isn’t it; health professionals agree that
healthy eating which includes counting calories and a low fat
diet are essential for long-term healthy weight loss.

The way to lose body fat and maintain muscle is to have a food
program for life. Quality food and more energy output are the
basics you’ll need to go for.

Low Carb Priciples For Dieters

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

By: Sarah Williams

So you are fresh to a low carb way of dieting are you? If so, there is no doubt that you have many queries about how the low carb plan works, what to eat and not to eat, and about the low carb rules. Well, the best recommendation that I can give you to read on and note every significant thing about the low carb in your head.

The low carb in general is often mistaken as a short term diet fad. The truth holds that low carb is not a short term and a quick fad diet, where you just follow a formula for a few weeks and then lose a few weights then in the end go back to your old eating routines.

With that, it is then necessary to consider that when you deal with low carb, you are dealing about a lifestyle change. In the principle of this one of the latest diet fads, you need to acknowledge how the foods make your body feel and how to feed it properly. Engaging in this diet fad is not just about eliminating sugar and starchy foods. It also means replacing all those carbohydrates that you eliminate with high quality and nutritious proteins as well as quality fats as well.

Essentially, the low carb way of eating is considered to have given several benefits to the dieters’ health and thus aid them in losing weight. So in line with such great news that this form of dieting contributes to the conditions of its followers, it is a common knowledge that when dealing with the low carb, a knowledge that many people cannot eat large amounts of carbohydrate foods such as sugar and starches without making and storing body fats is greatly expected.

Speaking of this latest diet fad, it is also interesting to know that under its principle, all the carbohydrates, except for the dietary fiber, are absolutely broken down into simple sugars molecules and is done through the digestive process. Also considered under the low carb principle is that the body will not burn fat for fuel unless a steady supply of easy-to-burn is there.

The low carb dieting also holds the principle that when the blood sugar remains stable after the process for following the low carb diet, the dieters will no longer be able to feel for food longing and the since the ketones are produced through the low carb dieting, the presence of the ketones are then vital for controlling the hunger. Thus the dieter will be able to lose fat and eventually lose weight.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

By: Heather Colman

Breast augmentation, also known as breast implant surgery is a popular cosmetic surgery to enlarge the size of a woman’s breasts or to reconstruct the breast to correct genetic deformities or after a mastectomy. This procedure is also performed during male-to-female sex changes.

How popular is breast augmentation? According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the third most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. In 2005, 291,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed.

There are four types of implants used in breast augmentation.

1. Saline implants, which have a silicone rubber shell filled with sterile saline liquid. These implants are currently the only type available outside of clinical trials in the United States, but future regulation may make more filler types available.

2. Silicone gel implants, which have a silicone shell filled with a viscous silicone gel.

3. String Implants, which used proypropylene (PPP), were eliminated years ago by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to the complications brought about by continuous growth after implantation.

Despite the apparent danger and frequent complications, this type of breast implant was popular among adult entertainers.

4. Tissue engineered implants are a new form currently in development. Cells taken from tissue artificially grown from human stem cells are combined with a scaffold material to produce a Tissue Engineered Breast Implant.

The advantage of this breast augmentation method is that there is no risk of leakage or rupture, and the size can remain stable for the lifetime of the patient, a contrast from the silicone or saline filled implants which typically reduce by approximately 40%.

Regardless of the type of breast augmentation procedure chosen, it is likely that women with implants will need to have one or more additional surgeries (reoperations) over the course of their lives. The most common reasons for reoperations include cosmetic concerns, capsular contracture, and rupture.

Reoperation rates are less frequent in breast reconstruction cases. The major implant manufacturers, Mentor and Inamed, both reported that almost half their reconstruction patients underwent additional surgeries within three years to fix implant problems, whether their implants were silicone or saline.
